Baru-baru ini Tun Dr Mahathir telah menunjukkan belangnya yang sebenar dengan tidak mengendahkan kedaulatan bangsa Melayu Islam di negara ini. Apabila Sultan Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar bertitah bahawa tindakan harus diambil ke atas pihak yang bertanggungjawab tidak meneruskan permohonan semakan dan pentafsiran kes Pulau Batu Puteh, Tun Dr Mahathir sempat mengelak dengan mengaitkan kes itu dengan perkara yang lain. Apabila ditanya apakah perasaan orang Melayu Kedah jika Langkawi diberikan dengan begitu sahaja kepada Thailand, Tun Dr Mahathir enggan menjawab dengan fakta dan logik, sebaliknya mengubah topik kepada penjualan pasir.  Kes Pulau Batu Puteh adalah amat penting dalam kedaulatan negeri Johor, dan juga kedaulatan Malaysia.
